KUTAI KARTANEGARA – President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo has inaugurated the Balikpapan-Samarinda toll road at the Semboja Toll Gate, Kutai Kartanegara Regency, East Kalimantan on Tuesday (17/12). The toll road is the first in Kalimantan.

Currently the toll road, operated by PT Jasamarga Balikpapan Samarinda, consists of sections 2, 3, and 4 with a length of 58.7 km. After the scheduled completion of sections 1 and 5 in 2020, the toll road’s total length will be 99.3 km.

“[Sections 1 and 5] will be completed in April 2020, inshallah,” said Mr Widodo in his speech as quoted by Bisnis.com.

According to Mr Widodo, the toll road will improve connectivity between Balikpapan and Samarinda, with a travelling time of one to one and a half hours from the previously three hours. In addition, the toll road is also expected to improve access to Indonesia’s planned new capital city in Penajam Paser Utara Regency. (MS)
